Tornadoes touch down on Colorado’s Eastern Plains

Several tornadoes touched down on Colorado’s Eastern Plains on Friday night but did not appear to cause extensive damage, National Weather Service forecasters said.

Trained spotters and storm chasers submitted five reports of tornadoes between 5:09 p.m. and 6:11 p.m. in Logan and Washington counties, according to the agency.

One person reported tornado damage to a home near Fremont Butte and another reported damage to two silos near Messex, a ghost town between Brush and Sterling.

No injuries were reported.

Tornado warnings for the area expired at 6:30 p.m. and severe thunderstorm warnings were in effect until 7:15 p.m.

It will take some time for the NWS Boulder office to determine the exact track and damage of the tornadoes, meteorologist Russell Danielson said Friday night.

The storm comes less than a week after four tornadoes touched down in eastern Colorado on Sunday, damaging and destroying dozens of buildings and homes.

While it’s a little uncommon to see this many tornadoes within a week, Danielson said, the second half of May and first half of June are the peak of Colorado’s severe weather season.
