Man gets minimum 8 years for stabbing Las Vegas tourist

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A man who stabbed a Las Vegas tourist more than two dozen times on a city bus will serve at least eight years in prison, a judge ruled earlier this month.

Clark County District Court Judge Ron Israel sentenced Devinski Tunggadewa, 27, to an 8-to-36-year sentence as part of a plea agreement. Earlier this year, Tunggadewa agreed to the prison sentence on charges including attempted murder and battery, records said.

Video showed Tunggadewa stabbing Joseph Lopez, of California, during a ride on June 20, 2024, prosecutors said. Tunggadewa faced charges for allegedly stabbing Lopez on one bus and then stabbing two men on another bus before battering a casino employee.

Before stabbing Lopez, Tunggadewa appears to talk to himself and wave around a knife for several minutes. Within minutes, Tunggadewa leapt out of his seat and stabbed Lopez about 27 times, according to a lawsuit Lopez filed against the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada.

In the second series of stabbings on a second bus, which happened on Fremont Street near 10th Street, Tunggadewa became angry when a passenger noted Tunggadewa was spitting on the floor, documents said. Tunggadewa then stabbed two people on that bus, including to the victims’ faces.

Tunggadewa then allegedly approached a person working at the Circa Resort & Casino as he tried to enter a cocktail bar. The employee noted that Tunggadewa’s hands were covered in blood. Tunggadewa then allegedly hit the employee in the head and ran off.

In the wake of a series of violent crimes in 2023, including the murder, RTC added more security guards. The agency has since switched security contractors, adding more than 300 armed guards to the system, according to Tom Atteberry, RTC’s senior director for safety and security operations.

With credit for time served, Tunggadewa will be eligible for parole in 2032.
