Missouri voters may soon have another option when it comes to political parties with the recent announcement from billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk that he is launching the new America party. But how does that impact Missouri Democrats and Republicans?

Democratic House Minority Leader Ashley Aune, D-Kansas City, told Missourinet, she is not super worried about Musk’s third party.

“Bless his heart, he can do what he can,” said Aune. “I think that all the money in the world can’t build you a coalition. And that is not his Forte. He can throw money at a problem, but that’s about all he can do. And Missouri Democrats are not worried that that’s going to impact our election cycle this year.”

House Speaker Pro-Tem Chad Perkins, R-Bowling Green, told Missourinet he is not even sure Musk will end up going through with it.

I have a lot of respect for Elon,” said Perkins. “He’s a tremendous businessman. His political skills might lack a little bit and I have a lot of respect for a lot of his views. However, politics is a negotiation. You don’t always get things your way. My gut says it doesn’t end up happening at all, and if it does, I don’t know that it makes a big difference. I think the United States is largely dominated by two parties.”

According to a recent poll conducted by Quantus Insights, 14% of voters said they would be very likely to support or vote for a political body launched by Musk, while 38% said they were not likely to support Musk.
