Veterans Day in Delaware: Where to honor those who served and how to give back

Parades, ceremonies, free meals and opportunities to volunteer offer Delawareans ways to recognize military service and the freedoms veterans have helped preserve.

DOVER, Del. — Delawareans will honor the men and women who served in the U.S. Armed Forces with parades, ceremonies, community events and special offers as the state prepares to observe Veterans Day on Wednesday, Nov. 11.

Events begin Saturday with a parade in Dover and a veterans luncheon in Georgetown. Additional observances are scheduled in Wilmington, New Castle and Milford.

Businesses and public agencies will also offer free meals, transportation and other benefits to veterans. For residents looking to participate, organizations throughout Delaware provide opportunities to volunteer and support veterans year-round.

Why Veterans Day matters

Veterans Day began as Armistice Day, marking the end of fighting in World War I on Nov. 11, 1918. In 1954, the holiday was renamed Veterans Day to recognize Americans who served in the military during war and peacetime.

Unlike Memorial Day, which specifically honors those who died while serving, Veterans Day recognizes all who have worn the nation’s uniform, living and deceased.

The contributions of veterans extend far beyond the battlefield. Generations of Americans have served to defend the nation, protect its constitutional system and preserve the freedoms that shape everyday life — from voting and speaking freely to building businesses, raising families and pursuing individual dreams.

That service often comes with considerable personal sacrifice, including time away from families, physical injuries and challenges that can continue long after military service ends.

Many veterans also continue contributing to their communities as teachers, business owners, first responders, volunteers and civic leaders.

Veterans Day is an opportunity to remember that the security, freedoms and opportunities Americans enjoy have been protected through generations of military service.

Recognize Veterans in Your Community

Residents can honor veterans by inviting them to speak at schools or civic organizations, writing letters of appreciation, supporting local veterans groups or helping preserve veterans’ personal histories.

Churches, Scout units, businesses and neighborhood organizations can organize activities that continue throughout the year.

Remembering those who served

The Wilmington VA recently recognized World War II Marine Corps veteran Robert Leroy James Quinn with its 2026 Wall of Honor award.

Quinn, a Purple Heart recipient who fought in the Pacific campaign, died in 2025 shortly before his 101st birthday.

His daughter, Karen Quinn, encouraged veterans to share their stories with their children and families.

Her message reflects the broader meaning of Veterans Day: preserving the experiences of those who served while recognizing the sacrifices made by veterans and their families.

For Delawareans, Veterans Day is more than a single day of remembrance. It is an opportunity to recognize that the freedoms, security and opportunities of American life have been preserved through generations of military service.

Attending a ceremony, listening to a veteran’s story or offering meaningful support are ways to ensure that service is never taken for granted.
