Presented by RK Duggal and produced by Riwaz Ramesh Duggal under RKD Studios, Mahakali marks the next instalment in the Prasanth Varma Cinematic Universe (PVCU). Directed by Puja Aparna Kolluru, the film stars Bhoomi Shetty, Akshaye Khanna, Sriya Reddy and Rohit Saraf in key roles.
Today, the makers released the film’s first song, Aigiri Nandini, kickstarting the musical promotions on a grand devotional note. Inspired by the timeless hymn dedicated to Goddess Mahakali and originally penned and composed by Sri Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya, the track blends devotional fervour with powerful vocals and striking visuals.
Music director Smaran Sai deserves praise for his impressive recreation of this iconic devotional composition. His elaborate orchestration gives the hymn a grand musical treatment without compromising its spiritual essence. The arrangement builds steadily, with the rising intensity making the listening experience increasingly immersive.
Anila Rajeev, Geetha Madhuri and Sai Charan bring their vocal prowess to the composition, delivering an energetic rendition with impressive variations. The interplay between the male and female voices, complemented by the richly layered backing chorus, adds considerable depth and enhances the song’s overall impact.
The visual presentation is equally impressive, with Sriya making a commanding appearance as Goddess Mahakali. Sporting a magnificent multi-armed form against a traditional temple backdrop, the actress looks striking as the fierce embodiment of the divine feminine.
What stands out most, however, is the unique portrayal of the goddess’s maternal side. Even in her formidable divine avatar, Mahakali is shown feeding a baby, beautifully highlighting the contrasting dimensions of her character – the immense power with which she destroys evil and the boundless compassion she embodies as a mother.
The visuals complement the musical grandeur exceptionally well, while Sriya’s powerful screen presence further elevates the devotional experience. Smaran Sai’s orchestration, the singers’ spirited performances and the majestic depiction of Goddess Mahakali come together to deliver several spiritually stirring and goosebumps-inducing moments.
With Aigiri Nandini, Mahakali has kickstarted its musical campaign on a promising note. The film is slated to hit theatres on January 8, 2027, coinciding with Sankranthi.
