LISCO and Midrex Technologies Discuss Iron Production Expansion

The Libyan Iron and Steel Company (LISCO) and the American firm Midrex Technologies, Inc. are exploring the development of direct reduction plants and the expansion of their production capacity. This came during a meeting held in Cairo today.

LISCO said this comes as part of its ongoing efforts to upgrade its facilities and enhance its production capabilities,

Midrex Technologies, Inc. is a world-leading direct reduction iron (DRI) technology provider and engineering company headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA. It is, however, a wholly owned subsidiary of Japan-based Kobe Steel, Ltd.

It is responsible for around 70% of the world’s low-CO₂ DRI production and nearly 90% of global hot briquetted iron (HBI) capacity.

LISCO reported that the meeting was attended by its Chairman, Mohamed Abdulmalik Al-Faqih, accompanied by the General Manager of Direct Reduction, the Director of Direct Reduction Operations, and the Director of Refractories and Lime Plant Maintenance.

Representing Midrex was its Chief Executive, K. C. Woody, accompanied by the company’s Project and Procurement Directors.

LISCO reported that the discussions focused on strategies for the maintenance and development of the direct reduction plants, with the goal of increasing production capacity. This is to be achieved through an integrated project executed under an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) model—encompassing engineering design, equipment procurement, and construction—under the full supervision of Midrex, with the potential to involve other entities in supply and construction activities.

LISCO said this initiative is part of the company’s persistent efforts to modernize its production infrastructure and strengthen its operational capabilities.
