Ed Markey wins Massachusetts Senate race after Haiti TPS push

Overview:

Democratic Sen. Ed Markey won reelection in Massachusetts, securing another term after introducing legislation earlier this year that would restore Temporary Protected Status for eligible Haitian immigrants through April 2029.

In June 2026, Sen. Ed Markey introduced Senate Bill 4814, which would require the federal government to designate Haiti for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) through April 20, 2029, allowing eligible Haitian nationals to remain and work legally in the country.

The legislation remains pending in the Senate Judiciary Committee. Markey also joined fellow Democrats in pushing for passage of a House-approved Haiti TPS bill, but the effort was blocked in July. His reelection comes as Haitian immigrants face continued uncertainty over their legal status and the future of federal immigration protections.

Democrat Ed Markey won election Tuesday to the U.S. Senate representing Massachusetts, defeating Republican John Deaton. Markey defeated a primary challenge from Rep. Seth Moulton on his way to winning another term in the Senate, where he’s served since 2013. Deaton is a lawyer and former Marine. The Associated Press declared Markey the winner at 8:01 p.m. EST.
