Kuoch Chamroeun, Kandal Provincial Governor, encouraged more than 300 young volunteers preparing for two years of military service to view challenges as opportunities to build resilience, discipline and strength, saying the experience will help shape their future.
“People should not be afraid of obstacles. Obstacles are also opportunities. Without obstacles, there are no opportunities, no self-discipline and no strength. Overcoming small obstacles makes us a little stronger, while overcoming bigger obstacles makes us much stronger,” he said.
He made the remarks today at the headquarters of the Kandal Provincial Military Operations Area, while presiding over a gathering and send-off ceremony for more than 300 volunteers heading to the military training school in Kampong Chhnang province.
Chamroeun said the two-year service period would present various challenges, but overcoming them would provide a strong foundation for future success. He encouraged the volunteers to remain determined, work hard, obey military rules and orders, and maintain solidarity with one another during their training.
He noted that military service is common around the world. Cambodia, having endured years of civil war, had achieved peace through the Win-Win Policy led by former Prime Minister Hun Sen in 1998.
Drawing on the country’s experience of war, he said Cambodia needed strong active and reserve forces to safeguard national security. After completing their military service, the young volunteers would become an important part of the country’s reserves.
He described their decision to volunteer as a significant sacrifice, giving up some of their personal leisure to undertake the important duty of defending the homeland.
The governor acknowledged that life at the training school could be difficult, as the volunteers would have to follow strict discipline, undergo physical training and adapt to living in groups.
However, he said the two-year experience would help them avoid involvement in gang-related activities and reduce their exposure to drug-related risks, while developing physical fitness, mental resilience, a positive mindset and military knowledge.
Chamroeun added that those who successfully completed their service, met the required qualifications and wished to pursue careers in the armed forces or gendarmerie would receive priority consideration from the government and the Ministry of National Defence.
He also said private companies, factories and other businesses valued employees who had completed military service, as they demonstrate discipline and a strong sense of responsibility at work.
