The Cambodia-China Mekong Kratie Friendship Bridge, a major infrastructure project in northeastern Cambodia, is scheduled to be officially inaugurated on January 5 next year, after helping improve travel and transportation for local residents for several months.
Kratie Provincial Governor Va Thorn highlighted the upcoming inauguration during a recent meeting to review the administration’s October work results and set priorities for the coming period.
The bridge has strengthened Cambodia’s domestic transport network, particularly by facilitating the movement of agricultural and agro-industrial products and supporting tourism activities across northeastern provinces.
It has also brought practical benefits to residents by reducing travel time and costs when crossing the Mekong River.
Students can now travel to school more conveniently, while residents can reach hospitals more easily in emergencies, including at night, without having to wait for ferry services. The bridge has also made river crossings safer.
The Cambodia-China Mekong Kratie Friendship Bridge broke ground on January 2, 2023, under the chairmanship of Hun Sen, former Prime Minister, and Wang Wentian, former Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia.
The bridge is 1,761 metres long and 13.5 metres wide, connecting Chitr Borie district on the eastern bank of the Mekong River with Prek Prasop district on the western bank in Kratie province, and has been in public use since April.
