Overview:
Democrat Kathy C. Hochul won election Tuesday as governor of New York, defeating Republican Bruce A. Blakeman. This is Hochul’s second time being elected governor. She was serving as lieutenant governor when Andrew Cuomo resigned in 2021, and she ascended to take his place. She won her first full term the following year. Blakeman is the Nassau County executive. The Associated Press declared Hochul the winner at 9:00 p.m. EST.
Editorial Note: New York is home to approximately 185,000 residents of Haitian ancestry, the second-largest Haitian population of any U.S. state, according to 2020-2024 American Community Survey estimates. Haitian communities are concentrated in Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island and Rockland County.
Gov. Kathy Hochul’s reelection comes amid continued uncertainty for Haitian immigrants following the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti in August. Hochul opposed the federal government’s decision, warning in an Aug. 17 letter to the Department of Homeland Security that ending TPS for Haitians and other immigrants would threaten livelihoods and force state and local governments to dismiss workers who lost employment authorization.
