Nagaland-Assam border districts adopt resolutions to strengthen ties

Kohima: The Joint Action Committee (JAC), representing Mon district of Nagaland and Charaideo district of Assam, has been renamed the Joint Peace Committee (JPC) following a meeting held at Mon on November 3.

The meeting, hosted by the Konyak Union at its headquarters in Mon, unanimously adopted a series of resolutions aimed at maintaining peace, harmony and mutual cooperation between communities in the two neighbouring districts.

The committee appointed Tingthok Konyak as its president and Diganta Changmei as secretary general for the 2026-2029 tenure, effective November 3, 2026.

The respective organisations have been asked to submit nominations for other vacant or required executive posts by November 20.

As part of the resolutions, the JPC agreed that any incident or misunderstanding that could affect relations between the communities or districts should be promptly communicated to the committee for consultation and intervention.

The members also resolved that criminal matters and unlawful activities should not be treated as communal issues, and should instead be addressed through established legal procedures.

The committee will hold general meetings at least twice a year, once in Mon district and once in Charaideo district. Special or emergency meetings may be convened by the president and secretary general when required.

The meeting also approved the committee’s official letterhead and seal, while its logo and flag will be considered at the next meeting.

The JPC will issue identity cards to its office-bearers and members, to be authenticated by the respective district administrations of Mon and Charaideo.

Other resolutions include organising an annual cultural exchange programme in collaboration with both district administrations and organisations, to promote mutual understanding, cultural preservation and people-to-people relations.

The committee also resolved that suitable sites would be identified in Charaideo district for the construction of a Konyak Ahng Morung and in Mon headquarters for a Tai-Ahom Cultural Centre.

The JPC further agreed to urge the respective administrations and police to strictly monitor drug abuse and trafficking to curb the flow of drugs.

The resolutions were unanimously adopted by members present at the meeting on November 3.

The committee said it would serve as a common platform for dialogue, consultation and peaceful resolution of issues affecting the people of both districts, while safeguarding their longstanding social, cultural and traditional ties.
