The Department of Animal Husbandry has stepped up surveillance at Thiyagavalli in Cuddalore district following the death of over 5,000 chickens at six poultry farms over the last few days.
“The cause of the deaths is being investigated. Whether the deaths are linked to an infection or weather-related factors including increase in moisture content would become clear only after laboratory investigations. The possibility of avian influenza has been ruled out,” Joint Director of Animal Husbandry M. Murugavel told The Hindu.
Official sources said the deaths were first reported at a poultry farm in Thammanampettai village in Thiyagavalli panchayat, where about 200 to 250 chickens died. A team from the Department of Animal Husbandry inspected the farm and collected samples of poultry feed and drinking water for testing.
During a follow-up inspection on October 31, 2026 officials confirmed that the remaining 3,500 chickens at the poultry farm had also died, taking mortality at the farm to nearly 100%.
The Department stepped up intensive disease surveillance at 11 poultry farms located within a 11-km radius of the affected farm. It was found that another 1,910 chickens had died at five farms. Samples from these farms were also sent to laboratories in Namakkal and Chennai for testing.
Deep burial of carcasses
An official said the carcasses were disposed of through deep burial, with assistance with the district administration, in accordance with standard operating procedures. Broiler chickens had a short rearing cycle and were generally sold within about 40 days.
Meanwhile, poultry farm owners in the affected areas have been advised not to sell birds or bring in or stock fresh chicks for three months. They have also been instructed to restrict visitors, disinfect vehicles and equipment, dispose of dead birds and maintain farm hygiene.
Intensive surveillance was continuing in the affected areas and measures were being taken to prevent further deaths, Mr. Murugavel said.
