American Airlines has officially resumed flights to Haiti, restoring a vital air link between the United States and the Caribbean nation.
Flights commenced on Sunday, the 1st of November 2026, when the airline launched daily nonstop service between Miami International Airport (MIA) and Cap-Haïtien International Airport (CAP) in Northern Haiti.
The inaugural flight, AA2492, was operated by a Boeing 737 and featured an entirely Haitian, Creole-speaking crew led by Captain Oliver Jean, who previously served as the country’s Director of Civil Aviation.
The return is particularly significant for Haiti’s diaspora community in South Florida, providing a direct connection to the country’s northern region. The service also marks American Airlines’ 100th destination in its Caribbean and Latin American network.
But why were the services suspended in the first place?
American Airlines suspended its Miami–Port-au-Prince flights in November 2024 after a post-flight inspection revealed bullet damage to an aircraft arriving from Haiti.
The aircraft had however landed safely, and no injuries were reported.
The security situation has continued to affect aviation in the country.
Following another shooting incident involving a Spirit Airlines aircraft in November 2025, the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) imposed restrictions on certain low-altitude operations around Port-au-Prince and parts of central Haiti.
Port-AU-Prince Remains Off-Limits
The American Airlines’ return does not mean normal air connectivity has totally been restored across Haiti.
• Daily Miami–Cap-Haïtien flights are now operating.
• Port-au-Prince remains subject to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) restrictions below 10,000 feet in specified areas.
• The current FAA restrictions extend through March 2, 2027.
• The U.S. State Department continues to classify Haiti as Level 4 – Do Not Travel.
A Regional Aviation Milestone
The resumption is an important development for Haitian families, businesses and travelers. Miami also provides onward connections to more than 90 destinations across the United States.
At the moment, the Northern Haiti is reconnecting with the United States while the country’s capital remains isolated due to security concerns.
It may be one country, but featuring two different aviation realities.
The Republic of Haiti, is a country in the Caribbean on the island of Hispaniola.
It is found in the Caribbean Sea, east of Cuba and Jamaica and south of The Bahamas.
Haiti occupies the western side of the island, which it shares with the Dominican Republic.
It is the third largest country in the Caribbean by area, and also the most populous with an estimated population of 11.4 million.
