TIJERAS, N.M. – Bernalillo County sheriff’s deputies came under gunfire at a Tijeras home and at least one round struck a patrol unit.
The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded about 3 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, near New Mexico Highway 333 after reports of yelling, a possible fight, threats of violence and several armed people at a home.
Deputies contacted a 17-year-old male outside the home, the sheriff’s office said. While deputies spoke with him, someone at the residence fired toward them. Deputies took cover, moved the teen to safety and set up a perimeter.
No deputies or civilians were hit by gunfire, according to BCSO. Investigators later found that at least one round struck a BCSO patrol unit.
Response and investigation
Because armed people remained inside the home, BCSO activated its SWAT team. New Mexico State Police, Edgewood Police Department and the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office also responded.
During the SWAT response, eight people came out of the residence. The sheriff’s office said drone operators gave deputies real-time views inside the home and saw multiple firearms.
Authorities have cleared the property and resolved the immediate threat. Criminal Investigations Division detectives remained at the scene for interviews and to investigate the shooting.
New Mexico Highway 333 closed for a time in the area during the response and later reopened. The investigation remains active and the sheriff’s office said it will release more information, including possible charges, when details are confirmed.
