El-Nino Floods affect 3000 households in Kenya’s Tana River Delta

Heavy rains along Kenya’s Coast have triggered flooding across the County of Tana River.

The floods reportedly occurred after Tulu and Minjila dams within the Tana Delta overflowed.

The floods have been sending water into nearby villages and homes in the precinct.

Reports indicate that 302 households have been displaced, while a further 3,156 households have been drastically affected.

This comes just a few weeks after the President of Kenya, William Ruto, was recorded asking what happened to the El-Nino rains that the weather department had previously predicted but the country is experiencing excessive sun and heat instead.

Meanwhile the Kenya Meteorological Service Authority (KMSA) has again released a five‑day forecast covering 41 of the country’s 47 counties, running from Saturday, the 31st of October to Wednesday, 4th of November 2026.

Rain or showers are projected for 40 counties between Saturday and Sunday making it the wettest weekend of the period, while the remaining days will see lighter precipitation.

Light to moderate rainfall – between 5 mm and 20 mm in 48 hours – is expected on Saturday and Sunday in 18 counties, including Nairobi, Kwale, Taita‑Taveta, Garissa, Machakos, Makueni, Nyeri, Murang’a, Kiambu, Kajiado, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Siaya, Kisumu, Migori and Nyamira.

Coastal counties such as Mombasa, Kilifi and Kwale will see light showers, while Kwale, Taita‑Taveta, Garissa and Makueni are forecast to receive moderate rain on Saturday morning.

Thunderstorms are flagged for 19 counties, all located in the Rift Valley and western regions, with storms expected on Saturday afternoon and persisting on several days in counties like Bomet, Kisii, Nakuru, Kericho, Kakamega and Migori.

Six counties – Wajir, Mandera, Marsabit, Turkana, Trans Nzoia and Elgeyo/Marakwet – are expected to remain completely dry throughout the five‑day period.

Temperatures will vary, with northern counties reaching up to 39 °C, while highland areas such as Nyandarua, Laikipia and Kericho will experience night lows as low as 7 °C to 11 °C.

KMSA advised the public to combine the five‑day outlook with its daily 24‑hour bulletins and to consult county‑specific forecasts available through County Directors of Meteorological Services.
