The NHRC has taken suo motu cognisance of a media report that police paraded three persons in a semi-clad condition, with ropes tied around their waists, in Kolkata and sought a report from the City Police Commissioner, an official said on Thursday (October 29, 2026).

The three persons, arrested for allegedly forcing a teenage boy, his father, and a friend to walk naked at Sarsuna in south Kolkata after the boy was caught kissing his girlfriend, were paraded through the area shirtless and in shorts by police on Tuesday (October 27, 2026) during the reconstruction of the incident.

Observing that the contents of the media report, if true, raise serious human rights concerns, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued a notice to the Kolkata Police Commissioner, seeking a detailed report within two weeks.

According to the allegations, a 17-year-old boy was caught with his girlfriend by her family on Sunday (October 25, 2026) evening within the limits of Sarsuna police station.

The boy and one of his friends were allegedly held captive in a room and assaulted by the girl’s parents and maternal uncle.

The boy was then allegedly forced to call his father to the spot.

The boy’s father alleged that the girl’s maternal uncle handed him a gun and gave him the choice of either shooting his son or walking naked with him.

The incident came to light after a video purportedly showing the boy, his father, and friend being paraded naked surfaced on social media.

PTI could not independently verify the video’s authenticity.
