EDGELEY (NewsDakota)- It was two old Class B rivals meeting in Edgeley on Monday night, and it was also two teams with state title aspirations, so high quality volleyball was virtually guaranteed.
And while that delivered, the ending was familiar for Carrington.
Behind a balanced effort, the Cardinals (31-2) swept aside the Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier Rebels (25-5-1) in Edgeley on Monday night.
The first set was back-and-forth with quality offense from both sides, as Carrington got balanced hitting from sophomore Mya Neis and junior Maara Kutz while the Rebels got four kills from Betsy Huber and five from Jenna Syversen before a late scoring run gave Carrington a 25-22 win.
The second set saw the Cards take control immediately behind hitting from juniors Marah Johnson and Aniston Hoornaert and with Kutz collecting three of her match-high 4.5 blocks, Carrington cruised to a 25-18 set win.
The third set started blisteringly fast for Carrington, who took a 13-3 lead before service runs by Calla Irey and Huber slowly chipped away at the lead, cutting it to 23-20 before Carrington scored two of the final three points for a 25-21 win and another sweep. The match was the first best-of-five match the Rebels have lost this season.
Carrington return home on Thursday night to host Devils Lake with coverage on KDAK The Cardinal and YouTube beginning at around 6:45pm.
The Rebels open the District 2B Tournament, in which they are the 1-seed, on Friday at 2:15pm on KXGT Thunder Country 98.3. They will face the winner of Tuesday’s play-in game between Strasburg/Zeeland and South Border.
