Pertamina studies gas distribution technology with Japanese partners to strengthen national energy security – ObserverID

Jakarta, IO – State-owned energy company PT Pertamina (Persero) is partnering with Japan’s Yachiyo Engineering Co., Ltd. and Atomis Inc. to study the potential of gas storage and distribution technology based on Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOF). The collaboration aims to support the use of domestic energy resources and expand access to energy for people across Indonesia.

As an archipelagic nation, Indonesia needs a range of energy distribution solutions that can reach areas with different geographical conditions and infrastructure. Pertamina is exploring gas storage and transportation technology that does not rely on pipelines as a potential complement to existing infrastructure.

The collaboration was formalized through a Joint Study Agreement (JSA) signed on Oct. 23, 2026, by Pertamina SVP of Technology Innovation & Implementation Hana Timoti; Atomis Representative Director and CEO Daisuke Asari; and Yachiyo Engineering Director and Executive Officer, Head of the Business Development Division Kenjiro Yamanaka.

The signing was witnessed by Yuki Haidir, Downstream Oil and Gas Safety Coordinator at the Directorate General of Oil and Gas under the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, and Japanese Ambassador to Indonesia Atsushi Ueno.

Pertamina Vice President of Corporate Communication Muhammad Baron said the state-owned energy company plays a strategic role in connecting Indonesia’s energy resources with the needs of communities across the country.

“Indonesia has energy resources that require distribution solutions suited to the characteristics of an archipelagic nation. As a state-owned energy company, Pertamina continues to explore innovations to strengthen energy security and expand public access to affordable energy,” Baron said.

He stressed that the collaboration is still at the study stage and is intended to provide a sound basis for informed decisions before any further development is considered.

“Innovation must deliver tangible benefits and meet Indonesia’s needs. That is why we prioritize comprehensive assessments of safety, operational feasibility and economic viability. The technology under study is expected to complement existing gas distribution options while supporting the use of domestic resources,” Baron added.

The collaboration will also examine the Smart Gas Network concept developed by Yachiyo Engineering and Atomis, which combines gas storage containers with remote monitoring to support delivery planning and gas consumption management.

The parties will assess how well the concept fits Indonesia’s infrastructure, user needs and applicable regulations. The potential use of domestic gas sources, including biomass-based gas, may also be evaluated within the scope of the study.

As an energy company operating across the upstream and downstream sectors, Pertamina continues to strengthen its core business while exploring low-carbon business opportunities through its dual-growth strategy. Technology partnerships are part of these efforts to support energy availability, access, affordability and public acceptance while strengthening national energy security. (eka)
