Dr. Mohana Rao Patibandla, founder and chief neurosurgeon of Dr. Rao’s Hospital–International Institute of Neurosciences (IIN), Guntur, presented research on complex craniovertebral junction surgery at the Society of British Neurological Surgeons (SBNS) centenary meeting in London.
In a statement on Saturday, Dr. Patibandla said the international scientific meeting was held from October 12 to 16, bringing together neurosurgical experts to discuss advancements in neurological care and surgical techniques.
His presentation, titled “Transnasal Endoscopic Odontoidectomy for Failed Posterior Craniovertebral Fusion: Salvage Decompression and Outcomes in 6 Complex Cases,” examined a minimally invasive approach for patients experiencing persistent compression despite previous posterior stabilisation surgery.
The craniovertebral junction connects the skull to the upper cervical spine. Compression in this region can threaten brainstem and spinal cord functions. The endoscopic technique enables surgeons to access the odontoid process through the nasal passages to relieve pressure from the front.
The research analysed six complex cases, highlighting the importance of individualised surgical planning, careful assessment and evaluation of neurological outcomes.
The findings contribute to international discussions on minimally invasive neurosurgery and complex spinal disorders, he added.
