Guwahati: A Delhi court has remanded content creator Amir Shokeen to five days of police custody in connection with an alleged incident of racial abuse and humiliation involving a youth from Tripura. Investigators are planning to take him to Ahmedabad to identify other people suspected of involvement in the case.
Delhi Police arrested Shokeen on Thursday after taking suo motu cognisance of a video that went viral on social media and allegedly showed the Tripura youth being subjected to racial remarks and humiliating treatment.
The Delhi Police’s Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit is investigating the case following a communication from the Special Police Unit for North Eastern Region (SPUNER), police sources said.
According to investigators, the video was allegedly recorded in Ahmedabad around a month ago. Police are examining the suspected roles of seven to eight people in connection with the incident.
Shokeen is expected to be taken to Ahmedabad as part of the investigation to help identify the other individuals allegedly involved and facilitate further action, including possible arrests.
The incident has renewed concerns over alleged racial discrimination faced by people from the Northeast in other parts of the country.
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has said that action would be taken against those responsible, while Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has directed the state’s Director General of Police to coordinate with Delhi Police in the investigation.
The Tripura Students Forum Delhi (TSFD) has also called for an impartial probe. In a complaint submitted to the Joint Commissioner of Police (SPUNER), the organisation alleged that the video showed a youth from Tripura being subjected to racial abuse and humiliation.
The forum urged investigators to preserve all relevant digital evidence, including the original video, metadata, account details and upload history, to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify those allegedly involved.
Delhi Police is examining both the circumstances in which the video was recorded and how it was circulated online, alongside the alleged roles of the other individuals under investigation.
The case has brought renewed attention to demands for accountability and stronger action against alleged racial abuse targeting people from the Northeast. Further developments are expected as investigators continue their probe.
