Cambodia and the United Nations marked 71 years of partnership and two decades of Cambodian participation in UN peacekeeping operations, reaffirming their commitment to international cooperation, peace and sustainable development.

The United Nations Day reception, held on Thursday evening at Raffles Hotel Le Royal in Phnom Penh, brought together senior government officials, ambassadors, members of the diplomatic corps and development partners to commemorate the longstanding partnership.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Prak Sokhonn said Cambodia had deployed more than 10,000 peacekeepers, including more than 1,000 women, to 12 missions across 10 countries since 2006.

“Cambodia remains committed to strengthening this partnership across all three pillars of the United Nations: peace and security, sustainable development, and human rights,” he said.

UN Resident Coordinator in Cambodia Vladanka Andreeva praised Cambodian peacekeepers for their contributions to international peace and security, highlighting the country’s transformation from a recipient of international peacebuilding assistance to a contributor to UN peacekeeping missions.

She said 26 UN agencies, funds and programmes were working with the Royal Government to support national development priorities, including healthcare, education, climate action and preparations for Cambodia’s scheduled graduation from Least Developed Country status in 2029.

Both officials stressed the importance of multilateral cooperation in addressing global challenges, including armed conflict, climate change and inequality, while strengthening the longstanding partnership for the benefit of the Cambodian people.
