Phnom Penh orders urgent Mekong riverbank repairs

Synopsis: Municipal authorities deploy heavy machinery in Chroy Changvar district following a second severe collapse since 2025 that damaged local infrastructure.

Phnom Penh Governor Khuong Sreng has instructed technical teams to expedite reinforcement work after a section of the Mekong Riverbank collapsed for the second time in less than two years in Chroy Changvar district.

The latest incident occurred before dawn on October 15 near Kramuon Market in Khtor village, Prek Leap commune, destroying a stretch of concrete road around 30 metres long and six metres wide. Commune Chief Preap Mony confirmed that the identical location previously collapsed on February 1, 2025.

During an inspection on Sunday, Sreng directed municipal officials to deploy heavy machinery immediately to fill the void with soil and build permanent protective structures. He also requested technical assistance from the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology to assess the site and examine options for redirecting river currents away from the vulnerable bank.

Learning of the collapse while overseas, he instructed local authorities to prepare repair plans before personally visiting the site on Sunday. Phnom Penh City Hall said the governor ordered swift restoration to ensure public safety and restore travel for riverside residents.

The collapse occurred shortly after Water Resources Minister Thor Chetha inspected nearby erosion-affected sections in Koh Dach commune and Prek Ampil commune in Kandal province on October 13. Chetha urged residents in vulnerable areas to take precautions and instructed local authorities to submit protection proposals for ministry assessment.

The ministry noted that riverbank erosion occurs during both rainy and dry seasons due to natural forces and human activities, threatening residential properties, public infrastructure and agricultural land.

Following his riverbank inspection, Sreng visited sections of Win-Win Boulevard affected by rainwater flooding, ordering officials to identify long-term solutions to prevent recurring waterlogging during heavy rainfall.
