A complaint has been filed with the Election Commission of India over West Bengal Bhartiya Janta Party president Sukanta Majumdar’s wife name enlisted at two places in the voter list. This comes as the ruling Trinamool Congress has alleged discrepancies in voter lists over fake and duplicate voters. 

Sukanta Majumdar’s wife has appeared in two voter lists in Balurghat and Jalpaiguri areas of West Bengal. 

Reacting to the allegations against is wife, Lok Sabha MP, Mr. Majumdar said that a non-issue is being exaggerated and made into an issue. 

“There is no problem here. My wife was a resident of Jalpaiguri at one point and later changed her location of residence and became a voter in Balurghat,” Mr. Majumdar added. He also said that the voter lists are prepared by the officials of the State government including Sub-Divisional Officers, Block-Development Officers, and District Magistrates. 

“If someone’s name appears in two places in two voter lists then the district administration who handles and makes the lists should be held accountable,” Mr. Majumdar further accused. 

‘Fake voter’ issue 

The development comes after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had recently accused the Election Commission of India of inducting voters from other States like Gujarat and Haryana into voters’ lists in West Bengal with the ‘blessings’ of the Bhartiya Janata Party. 

Trinamool leaders had also met Chief Electoral Officer over ‘fake voter’ issue on March 6. 

The CM had also announced a meeting of the 36-member ‘core committee’ announced by Ms. Banerjee on February 27 for scrutiny of the State’s electoral rolls. 

These committee members have conducted multiple door-to-door campaigns in the State to verify voter lists. This included many senior TMC leaders including Mayor Firhad Hakim who hit the streets himself to visit people’s homes and verify voter lists.
