Ten games in, and the top line of the Vegas Golden Knights is humming.
In particular, Jack Eichel and Mark Stone are getting off to their usual fast starts and it’s been instrumental to the Knights’ 8-2-0 start through the first 10 games.
The two stars combined for five points in the 6-2 win Saturday over the Pittsburgh Penguins to put them among the top 10 in scoring.
Eichel tacked on two assists to give him 18 points, second in the NHL only behind Edmonton’s Connor McDavid — who is on an unthinkable 23-point pace through eight games.
Stone had a goal and two assists — two days after notching a natural hat trick against the Calgary Flames.
Eichel and Stone finished the week with a combined 13 points. More importantly, the Knights won their third straight Saturday after dropping a 4-2 game in Minnesota on Monday.
“We’ve had good starts. We’ve gotten out to leads,” Eichel said. “Transition game has been working well. We’re getting pucks to the net and making plays. Our D are getting involved. We’re doing it by committee, which is great.”
The Knights have gotten contributions up and down the lineup, hence why they have a league-leading eight wins to start the year.
It’s another story when Eichel, Stone and forward Ivan Barbashev are contributing at the pace they are.
Eichel and Stone recorded multiple assists in the first five minutes on Saturday, the first instance in franchise history. It was the ninth time in the NHL over the past 25 years.
The Knights jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first four minutes because Eichel asserted his dominance.
He found a cutting Rasmus Andersson a minute into the game to put the Knights up early. Three minutes later, Eichel dropped a pass between two Penguins to find Noah Hanifin for a goal.
“I was kind of hoping he saw me because I saw how open I was,” Andersson said. “With Jack, you’ve always got to expect it. It was a hell of a pass. That’s why he’s one of the best players in the world.”
Barbashev had the quietest three-assist game imaginable Thursday. While Stone and Eichel stole the headlines, Barbashev lurked in the shadows and played a strong game.
Barbashev is a three-time 20-goal scorer and hasn’t found the back of the net yet. Meanwhile, Eichel and Stone have combined for 12 goals.
“He’s gotten a number of chances in the slot,” coach Ryan Craig said about Barbashev. “He hasn’t been able to finish one of those yet, but you can see the plays he makes. I think (Barbashev’s) game is in a very good spot.”
That shows how much Eichel and Stone are carrying the load. They’ve looked dominant in doing so.
The top line has had a 54-47 edge in shots and have outscored opponents 8-1 in 104 minutes at five-on-five, according to Natural Stat Trick.
Eichel and Stone can only do what they control. The Knights’ schedule hasn’t been the toughest. The only winning team they’ve beaten to this point are the 5-3-1 Seattle Kraken.
There’s a lot to digest in that last sentence.
But the Knights are off to a great start and Eichel and Stone are leading the way again. It sounds like another October.
