Four civilians, including village chief, injured in firing in Kamjong

Imphal: At least four civilians, including the chief of Chassad village, were injured after suspected NSCN-IM cadres allegedly opened fire with automatic weapons in Chassad village in Manipur’s Kamjong district on Saturday afternoon, according to preliminary information.

The firing reportedly occurred around 2.30 pm, prompting calls for security forces to intervene amid concerns over civilian safety and the possibility of further violence.

The injured have been identified as Thangjahao Haokip, chief of Chassad village; St. Khailun Haokip and Seikhohao, members of the Chassad Village Authority; and Seipao Haokip, chief of Phungtha (Kachouphung-Kuki).

Seipao Haokip was reportedly living as an internally displaced person (IDP) after fleeing his native village following alleged threats and violence involving NSCN-IM cadres and Tangkhul groups.

The injured were taken to a nearby Army camp in Chassad for medical treatment, according to local sources.

Further details were awaited.
