THOMPSON (NewsDakota)- The fight was there from a shorthanded Carrington Cardinals team on Friday night, but too many big plays ensured the result did not come.
Dex Avdem threw for 228 yards and three scores as the Thompson Tommies defeated the Cardinals 42-20 on Friday night in both teams’ season finales.
The first quarter proved difficult to get going as the teams exchanged four punts before Carrington (2-7, 2-5 Region 2A) marched 64 yards in thirteen plays and Gabe Clifton scored a 24 yard rushing touchdown on the final play of the quarter for a 7-0 lead.
The lead was short-lived as Avdem found fellow sophomore Jack Krogstad from four yards out and the Tommies (5-4, 3-4 Region 2A) leveled the game at 7. Later in the second, Avdem found sophomore Grady Hurst on a corner route in the end zone for a seventeen yard score and at the half it was 13-7 Thompson.
The third quarter, as was the case so often this season, proved decisive against Carrington. Avdem found Hurst for a 41 yards strike and Rylan Penas scampered 36 yards to extend the lead to 28-7. Krew Wolsky then scored the first of two 18 yard touchdown runs to cut the lead to 28-14 before Avdem went to Hurst on a double move for a 31 yard touchdown. He would later add a short touchdown run before Wolsky’s second score of the night set the final score.
Carrington says farewell to six outstanding seniors: Ewan Aberle, Gabe Clifton, Chuck Jorgenson (NDSCS commit), Alec Threadgold (Iniversity of Jamestown commit), Andrew Matt (NDSU commit) and Jaime Magro Rodrigo.
