In a game where defenses dominated, the Greenwood girls’ soccer team found one opening all night – and it was enough to secure the program’s first District 14 Tournament title since 2023.

Livvy Campbell’s goal late in the first half proved to be the difference as Greenwood held off Bowling Green for a 1-0 win in Thursday’s District 14 championship at Warren Central. It was the second 1-0 victory over the Lady Purples this year for Greenwood (15-1-4), which will now take aim at a second straight Region 4 crown.

“This is my first one as a coach as well,” Greenwood coach Driton Hyseni said. “It’s a nice trophy, but it doesn’t matter if you don’t win the next one. We get back to work next week. We played OK, but they came at us today. They played a really good game and I am proud of them as well, because that was a battle.”

Bowling Green (8-6-1) had limited chances on Thursday, with the best scoring opportunity coming in the 15th minute. Mia Greenwell, who scored the game-winning goal in Tuesday’s 1-0 win over South Warren, got free in the box and was advancing towards the net when Greenwood keeper Laney Lockhart opted to play the ball – coming out and snatching it away before Greenwell could get off the shot on goal.

It remained scoreless until the 33rd minute when Lily Padgett found Livvy Campbell free in the box and Campbell was able to finish it at point-blank range.

“It’s all my teammates’ work before,” Campbell said. “If Lily Padgett hadn’t played that ball before, none of this would have ever happened.”

The freshman leads Greenwood in goal scoring with 20 in the regular season.

“She just knows the game,” Hyseni said. “She knows how to make those goals. If she is in the box like that, I know it is going in. I don’t even have to worry about it.”

It was a stalemate from there, with neither team getting many chances. Greenwood’s best chance to add to the lead was a shot on goal from about 25 yards out that BG keeper Ella Gray Weisbrook didn’t clear immediately, but was able to corral it before it caromed away for the save.

Bowling Green got a free kick from about 30 yards out in the 67th minute, but the shot was high. In the final minute, the Lady Purples had a chance to tie with a corner kick but were unable to get a clean shot on goal.

“Our defense has been insane all year,” Hyseni said. “I think the most goals we’ve let in – maybe three goals in Gallatin and that’s a game that we lost. That also has to do with Laney. She’s a monster in there. She wants that ball. She goes and gets it. Sometimes she might be a little bit too crazy, but that’s what you need in a goalkeeper.”

Greenwood finished with six shots on goal, while the Lady Purples had one.

Both teams advance to the Region 4 Tournament at Warren East High School. Greenwood faces Glasgow at 3 p.m. on Sunday, while Bowling Green will face Barren County at 5:30 p.m. on Monday.

“We are going to take it one game at a time because anybody in this region can be dangerous,” Lady Purples coach Lisa Correa said. “Tonight I thought we played pretty well. We just couldn’t get the goal. The defense played well. We had a couple of mistakes and they capitalized on their opportunity. I’m proud of the way my girls battled. They never give up. I saw a lot of positive soccer, a lot of positive attitudes from the girls. We’re just going to try to build from here going forward.”
