Cambodia, Israel agree to strengthen bilateral consultations and cooperation

Synopsis: Cambodia and Israel have agreed to strengthen diplomatic consultations and high-level exchanges while exploring cooperation in trade, agriculture, education, tourism and labour.

Cambodia and Israel agreed to strengthen bilateral consultation mechanisms and regular exchange of high-level officials to explore new opportunities in trade, investment, agriculture and other sectors.

The agreement followed a meeting on Thursday between Prime Minister Hun Manet and Israeli President Isaac Herzog in Baku, Azerbaijan, on the sidelines of the seventh Summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA).

According to Mr Hun Manet’s Facebook post, both leaders expressed satisfaction with the progress of bilateral relations and reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation for the mutual benefit of their citizens.

The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in trade and investment, agriculture, education, tourism and labour, with both sides seeking further opportunities to deepen ties.

The two leaders also agreed to enhance consultation mechanisms and promote regular exchanges of visits by senior officials to identify new areas of cooperation.

President Herzog welcomed the meeting, saying it reflected the longstanding friendship between Cambodia and Israel, while Mr Hun Manet conveyed greetings from King Norodom Sihamoni to the Israeli President.

Both leaders acknowledged the development of relations between their countries over nearly six decades and expressed their intention to build on existing cooperation.

Mr Hun Manet also thanked the Israeli government for its continued attention, support and assistance to Cambodian students and citizens living, working and studying in Israel.

The latest meeting follows discussions between Mr Hun Manet and Israeli Ambassador to Cambodia Alona Fisher-Kamm at the Peace Palace in Phnom Penh on June 23, when both sides explored opportunities to expand cooperation across several sectors.

During that meeting, the ambassador reaffirmed Israel’s commitment to accepting Cambodian agricultural students for internship programmes and strengthening labour cooperation in the agricultural sector.

The two sides also discussed cooperation in education, science, technology, healthcare and water resource management, and stronger connections between businesses in both countries.

Thursday’s meeting took place during Mr Hun Manet’s official visit to Azerbaijan, where he attended the seventh CICA Summit, a regional forum aimed at promoting dialogue, confidence-building measures and cooperation among Asian countries.

The Baku summit, under Azerbaijan’s chairmanship, brought together regional leaders to discuss peace, security, stability and sustainable development.
