BROWNSBURG, Ind.– A Brownsburg tax preparer has agreed to plead guilty to two federal counts of helping prepare false income tax returns, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Indiana.
Evans Kludje, 43, signed a petition to plead guilty July 31, 2026, to two counts of aiding and assisting the making of a false federal income tax return.
Federal prosecutors say Kludje prepared thousands of fraudulent tax returns between 2017 and 2025, resulting in millions of dollars in losses.
Kludje worked as a partner and tax preparer at Millennium Tax Group from 2017 through 2025, receiving about 40% of the business’s profits. He launched his own tax preparation company, Imperium Financial Group, in 2021 while continuing to prepare some returns for Millennium Tax Group.
During the 2024 filing season, Kludje briefly returned to Millennium Tax Group to help prepare 2023 tax returns while also working for his own company, according to prosecutors.
The indictment says Kludje submitted false Schedule A forms for clients of both businesses without their knowledge. The forms included fictitious itemized deductions for charitable contributions and other expenses, including purported debt instrument losses, unrecovered pension investments and claim repayments.
Prosecutors say the deductions improperly reduced clients’ taxable income and generated refunds they were not entitled to receive. Kludje also allegedly filed the returns under clients’ names without identifying himself as the paid preparer, as required by law.
The case is part of a nationwide federal enforcement effort targeting tax fraud and related offenses. The Justice Department, Internal Revenue Service and IRS Criminal Investigation announced actions involving more than 76 criminal defendants whose alleged or proven conduct resulted in more than $490 million in intended losses to taxpayers.
Kludje’s sentencing hearing will be scheduled at a later date. He faces a maximum sentence of five years in federal prison for each count.
