Police arrest suspect accused of shooting at delivery driver in Monroe

EVERETT — An 18-year-old is in custody after allegedly shooting at a delivery driver from inside his Monroe apartment sparking a SWAT response last week.

The teen suspect was arrested in the city of Lacey on Tuesday afternoon, according to a social media post from the Monroe Police Department. He was booked into the Snohomish County Jail on suspicion of felony first-degree attempted assault and felony first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm, court records said.

Police began investigating on Oct. 8 after a delivery driver reported he was shot at while attempting to drop off a package at an apartment complex in the 18000 block of Blueberry Lane, the department said at the time.

According to a police report, the UPS delivery driver was leaving a “sorry we missed you” note, when someone allegedly fired multiple shots through the front door of the apartment.

Police said no one was hurt, but in charging documents, detectives said the delivery driver would have likely suffered severe injuries if he hadn’t happened to step away from the door shortly before shots were fired.

Officers responded and the North Sound Metro SWAT unit was called in as law enforcement worked to contact the suspected shooter, police said last week.

After reviewing video surveillance footage, police learned the likely suspect had left the apartment through a back door shortly after the shooting, a police report said.

During the investigation, officers found bullet holes in the front door and discovered five fired bullets in an adjacent apartment that was vacant at the time, according to charging documents.

While conducting a search warrant of the suspect’s apartment, officers reportedly found multiple handgun magazines, dozens of rounds of ammunition and a “red dot” handgun accessory inside the teen’s room, a police report said.

The suspect is not allowed to own a handgun or ammunition, because he is under the age of 21 and has a previous felony conviction, charging papers said.

The 18-year-old was taken into custody on Tuesday afternoon with help from Lacey and Olympia police officers, Monroe police said.

He remains in jail after initially being given no bail, records said.
