Here are five storylines to watch for today’s game:
1. Cleveland’s late offensive rally powered a Game 1 comeback
After being held scoreless through five innings, the Guardians were sparked by solo home runs from Chase DeLauter and Patrick Bailey to tie the game. Nathaniel Lowe delivered the go-ahead two-run single in the eighth, followed by ninth-inning insurance hits from Jose Ramirez and Jo Adell.
Cleveland amassed 14 hits, its most since Sept. 26 against the Kansas City Royals.
2. The Guardians moved within three wins of the World Series
Cleveland extended its postseason winning streak to four games and sits just three victories away from its first World Series appearance since 2016. The road victory also handed the top-seeded Rays their first loss of the postseason.
3. Cleveland’s bullpen effectively contained Tampa Bay
The Guardians deployed six pitchers to quiet the Rays’ lineup after starter Foster Griffin yielded two earned runs across four innings. Hunter Gaddis earned the victory in relief, while closer Cade Smith shut the door in the final frame.
4. Tampa Bay failed to capitalize on an early advantage
The Rays built an early 2-0 lead behind run-scoring hits from Junior Caminero and Jonny DeLuca, but ace Drew Rasmussen coughed up two costly home runs over six innings. A solo shot by Cedric Mullins in the eighth was Tampa Bay’s only other offense on the night.
5. Game 2 features a high-stakes duel between Messick and Peralta
Cleveland will start rookie AL Cy Young candidate and Plant City, Florida native Parker Messick, who aims to rebound from a shaky last appearance in the ALDS. Tampa Bay counters with Freddy Peralta, who allowed just one earned run in his lone postseason start after going 5-0 with a 0.79 ERA over his final six regular-season outings.
