Man injured in Fort Wayne police shooting during ‘mental crisis’

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — A man is in the hospital after being shot by an officer Monday evening on the south side of Fort Wayne.

According to the Fort Wayne Police Department, at 5:28 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 6800 block of Chadwick Drive on the report of a person suffering from a mental health crisis and behaving violently.

Additional officers were requested at the scene at approximately 5:39 p.m. following a shots-fired call. The officer who arrived at the location first also called a 15/84, which indicates that immediate assistance is needed.

Police said at least one officer discharged their firearm, striking a man in the home. The man was taken to the hospital for treatment, and police did not provide his condition.

FWPD did not clarify what led up to the shooting, or if any officers were injured.

Detectives are actively working to collect evidence, review video, and speak to witnesses. Police said they will provide further information as it becomes available.

Indiana State Police detectives are also on scene conducting a separate but parallel investigation, according to FWPD.
