Cambodia to host international forum on AI for climate action

Cambodia will host an international forum in Phnom Penh on October 13–14 to explore how artificial intelligence (AI) can help address climate change, strengthen climate resilience and support sustainable development, particularly in developing countries.

The AI for Climate Action Forum 2026 is organised by the Technology Executive Committee of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in collaboration with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the Royal Government of Cambodia.

According to the news statement of Ministry of Environment  yesterday stated that the two-day event is expected to bring together around 200 participants, including senior officials, government delegates, policymakers and technology innovators from developing countries worldwide, particularly least developed countries and small island developing states (SIDS).

Environment Minister Eang Sophalleth will preside over the opening ceremony on behalf of the Cambodian government, reaffirming the country’s commitment to global climate action.

The forum aims to strengthen regional and international cooperation and ensure that advances in AI technology are developed and applied to support environmental protection and sustainable development.

“Cambodia has reiterated its commitment to working with the international community to address climate change, while advancing green development strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and strengthen its capacity to adapt to climate-related risks in line with the Paris Agreement,” said the ministry.

As part of its ambition to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, the country is promoting the integration of emerging digital technologies, particularly AI, into key sectors to support climate action.

Potential applications include improving energy efficiency, supporting climate-resilient agriculture, strengthening forest management and enhancing early warning systems for natural disasters.

These technologies could help improve the availability and use of climate-related information, support more informed decision-making and strengthen preparedness for extreme weather events.

Participants will discuss opportunities, risks and challenges associated with digital infrastructure and emerging technologies, as well as ways to promote solutions developed by countries that are particularly vulnerable to climate change.

The forum will also feature the announcement of the winners of the AI for Climate Action Award 2026. Finalists from Bangladesh, Indonesia, Tanzania and Mali will present their innovations in Phnom Penh, showcasing technology-driven approaches to climate challenges.

Hosting the event reflects Cambodia’s efforts to strengthen its role in international climate cooperation while exploring how digital innovation can contribute to environmental sustainability and long-term economic development.
