Gov’t announces further delay in Demerit Point System rollout

The government is further holding off on implementing the demerit point system to provide time for a smooth rollout.

Transport Minister, Daryl Vaz, says there remains significant work to be done behind the scenes.

The demerit point system under the Road Traffic Act was put on hold in 2024 after protests by taxi operators.

It was to resume on October 1, but that date was shelved in August pending a review.

A task force chaired by State Minister Marisa Dalrymple Philibert is to submit recommendations to Cabinet.

No new start date has been set.

Speaking with Nationwide News, the Minister says he expects that review to be before Cabinet in a matter of weeks.

He says several options to ensure a fair equitable launch are being considered.
