GOVERNMENT Romania’s prime minister-designate Luca Niculescu is confident he will secure the 233 votes required to have his cabinet endorsed, following initial talks with the Social Democratic Party, the National Liberal Party, and the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania. Although there are disagreements and conditions regarding participation in the government, the PM-designate emphasised that in Thursday’s meetings all parties agreed to comply with the fiscal-budgetary commitments Romania has undertaken. Luca Niculescu said his cabinet will prioritise a budget revision, the preparation of next year’s budget, and protecting consumers from rising energy prices. On Monday he is set to hold talks with Save Romania Union and the parliamentary group of national minorities, among others. Luca Niculescu must submit a governing programme and a list of proposed ministers to Parliament by next Thursday.

ECONOMY Romania’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) remained unchanged in the second quarter of 2026 compared to the previous quarter, while the economy contracted by 0.6% in the first half of the year compared to the corresponding period last year, according to provisional data made public today by the National Statistics Institute. The data also shows a 1.9% decline in GDP compared to the corresponding quarter of 2025. The World Bank recently revised its forecast for Romania’s economic performance in 2026, estimating a 0.5% contraction. Romania’s GDP is expected to pick up in 2027, with a 1.7% estimated increase.

SPOTLIGHT The Spotlight International Light Festival begins today, bringing to Bucharest 19 projects, including 13 installations and 6 video-mapping shows created by artists and studios from Romania and abroad under the theme “Playground.” Spotlight also marks the conclusion of this year’s “Open Streets: Bucharest, Urban Promenade” programme, following 25 weekends during which city streets were turned into places for strolling, culture, and social interaction. The festival offers 3 evenings of art, light, and technology across an exhibition area exceeding 7,000 sq.m., featuring 16 artists from 7 countries. The event is complemented by “Spotlight Talks” and the annual meeting of the International Light Festivals Organisation, hosted in Bucharest for the first time.

INTEREST The National Bank of Romania has decided to keep the monetary policy interest rate at 6.50% per year to ensure medium-term price stability. The institution argues that inflation fell significantly during the first two months of the third quarter, from 10.42% in June to 8.16% in July and 6.17% in August. However, the central bank expects the annual inflation rate to go up by the end of the year, driven primarily by rising prices for fuel, energy, and other raw materials, including agri-food products, as well as by fluctuations in the national currency’s exchange rate. The Central Bank also warns that uncertainties regarding fiscal consolidation measures persist and that the war in the Middle East and the energy crisis entail significant risks for the economy and inflation.

NOBEL The winner of the Nobel Peace Prize is to be announced in Oslo today. In a world torn apart by conflicts and crises, 287 individuals and organisations have been nominated this year for the prestigious award, AFP reports. In 2025, the distinction was awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado. On Thursday, the Royal Swedish Academy announced that the Nobel Prize in Literature was granted to the Canadian writer Anne Carson. The Nobel Week began on Monday with the prize in medicine, which went to the American Karl Deisseroth and the Germans Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel. On Tuesday, the Belgian Francis Halzen was announced as the winner of the prize for physics, while on Wednesday the chemistry prize was shared by French researcher Henri Kagan and Japanese researcher Kenso Soai. The Nobel Prizes come with a financial award recently increased to approx. USD 1.21 million.
