LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Two New Mexico voters told KOB 4 border security matters, but some want federal candidates to avoid extreme positions.
Border policy ranked as the second most common issue on voters’ minds as they head to the polls, according to a SurveyUSA poll.
KOB 4 asked voters what they want to see as concerns of a weak border security agenda under the Biden administration helped propel President Trump to victory in 2024 and now new concerns from some who say President Trump’s border agenda goes too far.
“What do you think that… Goldie Locks zone is on the border,” KOB4 asked a Jamie from Las Lunas
“Somewhere in between, not extreme and I know they like to blame Biden for everything from A to Z, but somewhere in between that makes everybody happy and keeps people safe,” one voter said.
“What do you think that sweet spot is that candidates should be looking for?” Blake asked.
“I mean we have rules and laws on the books and immigration issues are a misdemeanor, so I don’t understand why the federal government is using such a heavy hand on something that is a misdemeanor and deporting people to different countries in God knows where,” Nessa from the South Valley noted.
A first-time illegal border crossing is a misdemeanor, while a later offense could be charged as a felony. There are other paths that could lead people to be in the country illegally in other ways, including overstaying a visa.
The issue remains a major one for candidates in southern New Mexico.
