Letters: Tackle root causes of chronic school absenteeism | Opinion

In a recent conversation about truancy, I was asked, “Can we make school fun again?” Given the chronic absenteeism our schools face, there is alarm and a real need to examine root causes and solutions.

The research shows that the biggest correlations to chronic absenteeism are: poverty/low socioeconomic status; health and mental health conditions; disabilities and special needs; lack of belonging and school climate; and structural and logistical barriers, such as inadequate transportation.

There has been such an emphasis on testing and accountability that other areas have lost attention as we focus on academic struggle. Baton Rouge schools have a bus driver shortage, leaving families guessing about when or if a bus will arrive. Some absences are due to legitimate health concerns, whether physical or mental.

Our school system serves a population of students who deal with the effects of poverty, such as housing instability, food insecurity and community stress, all leading to absenteeism.

When I ask people what they want to see in our schools, the answers are remarkably consistent: warm, inviting schools close to home where the classroom environment is conducive to learning, teachers are valued and supported, safety is prioritized, interesting electives are available (art, music, theater, shop) and there are ample sports opportunities, all in addition to strong academics.

I appreciate the current East Baton Rouge schools superintendent’s focus on enriching the high school experience. As a Baton Rouge Youth Coalition mentor, I am taught to help students “find their thing.” We have to improve connections with trusted adults, foster a sense of belonging and make school relevant and engaging.

First, we have to make sure the buses show up consistently. Then we have to make school both challenging and fun to keep students eager to be there.
