Fiona Ey Re-elected Unopposed as Samoa Law Society President

Fiona Ey has been re-elected unopposed as President of the Samoa Law Society for another 12 months at the Society’s Annual General Meeting held last Tuesday at the Lava Hotel.

The Founding Partner of Clarke Ey Koria Lawyers told Samoa Global News she was humbled to be re-elected and to continue serving as President.

“The new Council’s work will focus on delivering the Action Plan and creating tangible outcomes for members,” she said.

Ey said some key priorities for the next 12 months include establishing a Bar-Bench Dialogue Forum, and launching new initiatives such as a Mentoring Programme and an Early Career Lawyers Committee.

The Samoa Law Society also plan to introduce a Social Media Professional Conduct framework, and develop a guide on Responsible Use of AI in Legal Practice.

Continuous Education is also on the agenda for the legal profession with plans to introduce compulsory professional development hours to strengthen public confidence in the legal profession, said Ey.

Reflecting on the past year, the SLS President highlighted the Society’s Golden Jubilee and the development of a five-year plan.

“This year, we celebrated the Samoa Law Society’s 50th Anniversary. As an outcome of our Golden Jubilee Symposium, our members developed an ambitious Five Year Action Plan for the Society,” she said.

Ey congratulated Treasurer Sine Lafaialii Koria and Councillors Quentin Sauaga and Lagafuaina Tavita, who were also re-elected.

She welcomed incoming Vice President Letoafaiga DJ Fong, Secretary Sala Sapolu-Margraff and Councillor Matthew Alai.

“They bring a great depth of experience and skills to the Law Society’s leadership team,” she said.

Ey also thanked the outgoing Council members for their service.

“To our outgoing leaders, I acknowledge with sincere appreciation the dedicated service of our longstanding Secretary, Taelegaifetu Violina Leilua, Vice President Ann Matalasi Fata and Councillor Steve Chan Chui.”

A commercial lawyer with more than two decades of experience advising clients across the Pacific and Asia, Ey also holds leadership roles within the Commonwealth Lawyers Association and LAWASIA.

Her work includes contributions to discussions on climate justice, the rule of law and human rights. Ey is also Papua New Guinea’s Honorary Consul in Samoa.
