The Cape Henlopen Vikings (4-0) defeated the Hodgson Silver Eagles (1-4), 35-28, on October 3 to remain undefeated to start the season. The Vikings are 4-0 for the first time in over a decade.

MIDDLETOWN, DE — Normally when Cape Henlopen senior Jameson Tingle is mentioned in correlation to a football game it’s because of his talents on the offensive side of the ball. On a rainy Saturday afternoon, Tingle’s impact on defense was what earned Cape Henlopen its fourth win of the season and first 4-0 start in 12 years.

The Silver Eagles trailed the Vikings by seven when their final drive of the game started on their own three-yard line with a little over eight minutes remaining in the game. Hodgson quarterback, senior Kevin Browning, connected with fellow senior Dorian Wilson on a 31-yard pass and subsequent runs from Browning brought Hodgson into Cape Henlopen territory. The Silver Eagles drove the ball to the Viking 18-yard line, needing inches to extend the drive on fourth and less than a yard.

Browning rushed the ball into the middle of the Cape Henlopen defense and was met by Viking junior Geoffrey Davis rushing in from his spot in the secondary to make the tackle. Davis’ tackle hit the arm of Browning and jarred the ball loose. Tingle quickly jumped on the ball securing possession for the Viking offense with 1:25 left to play.

“Coach just called a blitz on my part so I was already in the mix,” Tingle said postgame. “I seen my teammate knock the ball out and after I see that it’s just look around and try to find the ball and then I found it and I dove. I could’ve been scared, I could’ve did this, but I didn’t really care. I see ball, get ball, and luckily I was able to get it.”

Tingle’s defensive play completed a strong second half for the University of Delaware commit as he led the Vikings to a comeback victory.

The Silver Eagles started the game with a recovery on an onside kick and turned the possession into eight points on the game’s first drive. Senior running back, Keytwan Sabur, scored the touchdown on a 23-yard run and scored Hodgson’s second touchdown on its next drive via a four yard run. The Vikings answered the pair of touchdowns with a couple short yardage touchdown runs from Tingle, tying the game, 14-14, forty seconds into the second quarter.

Hodgson fired right back with its senior signal caller on a 14-play drive that ended with a one-yard Browning touchdown and a completed two-point conversion pass from Browning to sophomore Julian Coleman. Tingle and senior Aidan Lehmuth connected on a 26-yard catch and score, but the two-point try was no good, leaving Hodgson in the lead, 22-20. Browning completed the first half scoring with his second rushing touchdown, putting the Silver Eagles ahead, 28-20.

That’s when the quarterback Cape Henlopen senior Stephen Sivels nicknamed “Thanos” took over.

“I call him Thanos [because] he do it all [on] both sides of the field,” Sivels said about Tingle. “He got a fumble recovery, passing touchdowns, punching it in, all that so I call him Thanos.”

Tingle completed eight of ten pass attempts in the second half for 168 passing yards and a touchdown. Tingle’s passing touchdown was a 46-yard catch and run to Sivels that tied the score after a run from Tingle on the two-point conversion. Sivels’ touchdown grab was one of five catches he hauled in throughout the game. Sivels ended the game with over 100 receiving yards.

“Jameson, he’s a great quarterback. He can swing it from the opposite side and hit me right on the spot, so yeah, I really love playing with Jameson because he’s a really good quarterback,” Sivels said.

Tingle scored the go-ahead touchdown on a three-yard rush with a little over eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. It was the first time Cape Henlopen led during the afternoon. Tingle finished the game with 295 passing yards, 109 rushing yards and five total touchdowns.

“Just my teammates man. It’s just what we’ve been through, summers since we’ve been young, I’ve been playing with these guys for a long time, so they’re able to give me the courage, be able to keep me level-headed and yeah they just give me the courage to do everything,” Tingle said about how he’s able to stay composed in adverse game situations. “All kudos to them.”

Cape Henlopen’s next game is a homecoming matchup against Appoquinimink on October 9. The game will be played in Lewes, Delaware, and start at 7:00 p.m.

The Silver Eagles next game will be against St. Georges on Friday, October 9, at 3:45 p.m. St. Georges has won the matchup two years in a row.
