JAMESTOWN – For Jamestown Jimmies ACHA Division 1 Men’s Hockey, this was much more like they like.
After being thumped by UMary 8-0 on Thursday in Mandan, the eighth-ranked Jimmies eased past the 11th-ranked Marauders Saturday 5-1 at John L. Wilson Arena in Jamestown’s home opener.
UMary (1-1-0-0) gained a 1-0 lead early with Dain Sardell scoring his first goal and fifth point of the weekend only 3:55 into the game.
But the lead didn’t last five minutes. The first regular season goal by Jamestown (1-1-0-0) came from Jace Grabinsky at 8:13, set up by Marcus Fritel and Rylan Gage.
Leonardo Kahlhammer gave the Jimmies the lead for keeps at 15:19 off assists by Eli Cardosi and James Hooton and UJ led 2-1 after 20 minutes.
Carter Johnson scored the second period’s only goal, a power play marker, at 11:11 with assists by Raymond Warrack and Grabinsky and the Jimmies were up 3-1.
Two goals just over a minute apart salted the game away for Jamestown in the third stanza. Bryton Morrow scored from Cameron Oien and Cai Robinson at 14:29, with Hooton scoring just 1:13 later from Cardosi and Wyatt Johnson.
Jimmies’ goalie Brandon Weare stopped 22 UMary shots. Jamestown had a 45-23 shot advantage.
Jamestown will play back-to-back MCH games with Waldorf next Friday and Saturday in Albert Lea, Minnesota.
