Public consultation set for Pacific Games Organisation Bill

Members of the public will have an opportunity tomorrow to give their views on legislation that would establish the organisational structure for Tonga’s hosting of the 2031 Pacific Games.

The Legislative Assembly of Tonga will hold a public consultation on the Pacific Games Organisation Bill 2026 at 2pm tomorrow, Friday, October 2.

Three parliamentary standing committees — Social Services, Finance and Public Accounts, and Legislation — are jointly considering the Bill after it was referred to them on September 8.

The Bill was introduced by Minister for Internal Affairs Hon. Fane Fotu Fituafe on August 24.

What does the Bill do?

The proposed legislation would establish an Organisation Committee and provide for other arrangements required under Tonga’s host contract and the Pacific Games Charter.

According to Parliament, many of the provisions are requirements of the Pacific Games Council and are conditions associated with Tonga hosting the Games. Parliament said similar requirements have applied to other recent host countries.

The legislation would remain in force until the end of the 2031 Pacific Games, after which it would be repealed.

How can the public participate?

Parliament has invited members of the public and relevant stakeholders to attend the consultation at Parliament House, ask questions and provide feedback.

The consultation is expected to be also broadcast live on radio and social media.

Parliament said the consultation is intended to raise public awareness, encourage community participation and ensure public views are considered as the Bill is examined.

The public consultation is part of the committees’ consideration of the proposed law. It does not itself determine whether the Bill will become law.
