Engineer Miguel Lorenzo Fabrega took office today, Thursday, October 1, 2026, as the new Deputy Administrator of the Panama Canal, during a ceremony attended by the Minister for Canal Affairs and Chairman of the Panama Canal Board of Directors José Ramón Icaza Clément, and Panama Canal Administrator Ilya Espino de Marotta.
Members of the Panama Canal Board of Directors also attended the event, serving as witnesses to the signing of the document that formalized Engineer Lorenzo’s appointment as deputy administrator of the interoceanic waterway.
During the ceremony, Minister Icaza underscored the importance of Deputy Administrator Espino de Marotta’s role in strengthening the organization’s management and in fulfilling the Panama Canal’s mission as a driver of global trade and of sustainable development for the country.
This was followed by the signing of the Certificate of Assumption of Office, through which Engineer Lorenzo officially assumed his new duties among the canal’s leadership.
In his remarks, the new deputy administrator expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him and reaffirmed his commitment to work alongside the canal team to maintain operational excellence, drive innovation, and continue strengthening the competitiveness of the maritime route in service of international trade and Panama.
With this appointment, the Panama Canal reaffirms its commitment to sound, professional management focused on ensuring the continuity of safe, efficient, and sustainable operations for the benefit of Panama and its customers around the world.
Deputy Administrator Lorenzo brings 28 years of experience gained at the Panama Canal. Throughout this period, he has held positions with increasing responsibility, from structural engineer to Executive Manager of Engineering, Deputy Manager of Design for the Third Set of Locks, and later Vice President of Engineering and Services. Since 2020, he has served as the Vice President of Infrastructure and Engineering.
