The Valley News is excited to introduce a monthly overview of the cases we’re following, with links to the full stories.
From death investigations to federal indictments, we covered new developments last month in Newport, Lebanon, Hartford, Chelsea, Claremont, Haverhill and Bradford:
The Latest
A car crash at Breakneck Road in Newport injured two adults and two juveniles. Police continue to investigate the circumstances, we reported on Sept. 14. So far, no charges have been brought against the 19-year-old driver, and all four people have been released from the hospital, Police Chief Alex Lee confirmed Wednesday.
A 27-year-old Newport man took his own life after shooting his romantic partner multiple times at their home, police believe. An autopsy revealed that Jack Steele’s cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head, with the manner of death being suicide. The 23-year-old female victim was hospitalized, we reported on Sept. 23.
If you or someone you know is struggling with thoughts of suicide, call or text 988. For domestic violence help, call 1-800-799-7233.
Lebanon Police began investigating antisemitic graffiti at several locations across the city. Sharing footage of two juvenile suspects, police requested the public’s help identifying them, we reported on Sept. 21.
Responding to a car fire, police discovered the body of a 62-year-old man in the burned vehicle at Hartford Point Cemetery. Based on evidence gathered throughout the course of the investigation — which remains open — Hartford Police have no reason to suspect homicide, we reported on Sept. 21.
Ongoing
The case of a fatal Chelsea crash that killed 16-year-old Kaylee Bailey back in October may be heard in Burlington over concerns of an impartial jury. When Kyle Hunt was charged with a felony and misdemeanor for the alleged crime, a crowd of people showed their support for the victim in court, which prompted Hunt’s lawyer to request the trial be moved, we reported on Sept. 14.
A federal grand jury has indicted six suspects in a January kidnapping case where police believe a 36-year-old woman was brought from New Hampshire to Vermont against her will, injured and held for ransom over drugs. Many of the charges carry a life sentence for the six alleged perpetrators, we reported on Sept. 22.
A 66-year-old Hartford man who police believe falsely activated a fire alarm in August — days after allegedly flooding an apartment intentionally — missed his arraignment. A Windsor County judge granted an arrest warrant for Jefferson Dickie, we reported on Sept. 23.
Lance Simons, a 55-year-old Claremont man, pleaded not guilty to multiple charges of aggravated felonious sexual assault in Sullivan Superior Court. The allegations against Simons, who was arrested in May following a months-long investigation by Claremont Police, date back over 20 years and involve multiple victims, we reported on Sept. 24.
Newport Police have an arrest warrant out for 50-year-old Jiang Xiu Yu in connection with a human trafficking investigation at Harmony Wellness Spa on John Stark Highway. The investigation is ongoing and police say additional arrests are expected, we reported on Sept. 25.
A grand jury recently indicted 21-year-old Jayden McClanahan and 24-year-old Carlington Green on murder charges for an April apartment robbery turned homicide in Haverhill. The two suspects, and possibly others, allegedly entered a Nelson Street home, killed 22-year-old Demetrius White and injured a second male occupant before fleeing, we reported on Sept. 28.
Vermont State Police have asked for the public’s help finding the remains of Corey Crooker, who they believe was shot and burned in a fire at a Bradford residence last year. Defendants in the murder case, James Nickles and Lisa Akey, are currently incarcerated, and Crooker’s family — including his parents, sister and daughter — continue to seek closure, we reported on Sept. 29.
A Grafton County grand jury that met in North Haverhill on Sept. 18 indicted 72-year-old Gene Pease on felony and misdemeanor charges related to the alleged sexual abuse of a 10-year-old girl in Lebanon, we reported on Sept. 30.
Concluded
The National Transportation Safety Board has released its final report on a July plane crash at the Newport airport that left the pilot seriously injured and substantially damaged the aircraft. The probable cause was the pilot’s failure to attain an appropriate touchdown point, which resulted in a runway overrun, we reported on Sept. 9.
Christina Garrison, the 38-year-old woman who police say injured a Haverhill officer with a car, took a plea deal on one felony and five misdemeanor charges. She was sentenced to several months in jail on top of five already served, but her sentence could increase to nearly six years for not following the court order, we reported on Sept. 25.
