Some opposition political leaders in South Sudan have expressed expectations that the inter-party dialogue in Juba will address key issues surrounding the country’s upcoming elections.

The dialogue was officially opened by President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Thursday.

Speaking to Eye Radio at the Transitional National Legislature premises, several political leaders called for discussions on election security, political participation and government funding for political parties.

Dr. Issa Muzammil Sabit Makilele, leader of the National Patriotic Movement, said presidential and gubernatorial candidates need adequate security protection during the campaign period.

He also called for clarity on government funding for political parties participating in the elections.

Meanwhile, United South Sudan Party leader Paulino Lukudu Obede said the dialogue should clarify whether the country will conduct general or partial elections.

Lukudu also called for the police to take the lead in providing security for candidates, polling centres and electoral officials.

Moro Isaac Genesio, leader of the South Sudan National Movement for Change, called for a free political environment and effective mechanisms to resolve election-related disputes.

He said political parties and candidates should be allowed to participate freely and fairly throughout the electoral process.

The inter-party dialogue is expected to provide a platform for political parties to discuss outstanding issues ahead of the elections, including security, political participation and the conduct of the electoral process.
