Mount Pleasant Waterworks (MPW) announced it finished seven sewer extension projects. These projects are in the Shem Creek, Seven Mile and Snowden communities. Over 100 property owners in those areas now have access to public sewer. MPW received $13 million in grant funds for the work. This funding came through the South Carolina Infrastructure Investment Program (SCIIP).
Crews installed 15,565 linear feet of new wastewater pipe. Most of it was 8-inch pipe laid in road rights-of-way. Construction began in September 2024 and wrapped up in August 2026.
About the Grant-Funded Projects
Environmental Protection through Septic Tank Abatement – $10 million
This grant supported six projects. They removed the need for septic tanks in the Shem Creek watershed. The projects also extended wastewater service to the Seven Mile community. In total, the projects installed 8,406 linear feet of pipe. MPW contributed $4 million to meet the grant’s matching fund requirement.

• Children Road – 700 linear feet
• Sam Edwards Road – 1,407 linear feet
• Louise Terrace Drive – 2,187 linear feet
• Pelzer Drive – 1,451 linear feet
• N. Shem Drive/Russell Drive – 1,856 linear feet
Snowden Gravity Wastewater Extension Phase 3 – $3 million
This grant paid for a wastewater service extension to the Snowden community. It was a joint effort between MPW and Charleston County. Crews installed 7,159 linear feet of 8-inch wastewater pipe in five phased segments. Charleston County gave $4 million. MPW added $1 million. This met the local funding requirement.
Property owners on finished streets can now connect to MPW’s public wastewater system. This means they no longer need to use individual septic tanks.
