One hundred Ni-Vanuatu students are preparing to begin higher education in Vietnam, with the Ministry of Education and Training continuing to finalise arrangements for their departure.
The Ministry has received an updated report from its Education Attaché in Vietnam confirming that preparations are progressing for students placed across eight Vietnamese universities, with the first departures currently being planned for October 2026.
The students will study at institutions including Nha Trang University, Thai Binh Duong University, Van Lang University, PTIT, Maritime University, Phenikaa University, University of Forestry and Nong Lam University.
For the students, the move to Vietnam will provide an opportunity to gain academic knowledge, develop professional skills and experience a different culture and education system.
The Ministry says these opportunities are also aimed at preparing the students to eventually contribute their knowledge and skills to Vanuatu’s development.
The Director General of the Ministry of Education and Training says the Ministry recognises the importance of getting students to their institutions as soon as all necessary arrangements are completed.
“Every student we send overseas represents an investment in Vanuatu’s future. These young people will have the opportunity to gain knowledge, experience and professional skills that they can eventually bring back and contribute to the development of our country.”
The Education Attaché’s latest update indicates that several groups of students will begin Vietnamese-language studies upon arrival before progressing into their respective academic programmes.
For some students, the language programme is expected to begin early so they can complete the required language component and move into their official studies as scheduled.
The Ministry acknowledges that sending students overseas involves several stages, and some students are still awaiting final university confirmations and visa documentation.
The update also notes that Australian transit visa requirements may contribute to travel delays for some students.
The Ministry is continuing to work with the relevant universities, the Education Attaché in Vietnam and other stakeholders to complete the remaining arrangements.
For students and their families, the waiting period can be challenging. However, the Ministry says the latest update shows the process is moving forward, with students at different stages of readiness and anticipated travel dates now being identified.
The Ministry will continue to provide updates as admission, visa, funding and ticketing arrangements are finalised.
