ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – New Mexico’s newest minor party says it wants to offer voters an option beyond Democrats and Republicans in the general election.
New Mexico voters will return to the polls in a few weeks, and most contested races will again feature a Democrat and a Republican.
The New Mexico Forward Party is the state chapter of the national Forward Party, which former Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang founded.
Party leaders describe it as a centrist or moderate party that sits between Democrats and Republicans and says it focuses on principles instead of specific policies.
“The New Mexico Forward Party is a group of folks nationally and in New Mexico who want to see better civil engagement, lower the temperature of politics, set up a system and a group of candidates who will listen to everybody, not call anybody evil, and actually work to solve problems, not just fight each other,” said Bob Perls a New Mexico Forward Party chair.
Rushton said the Forward Party gained official minor party status earlier this year, but getting candidates on the ballot has created challenges for the party.
