DEVILS LAKE (NewsDakota)- There was quite the surprise on Tuesday, with Devils Lake being ranked number one in the new NDAPSSA Class A polls, ahead of Carrington.
Whether that was motivation or not, the third-ranked Cardinals made a loud statement against the newly crowned top dog in the state.
Using a balanced attack and big service runs, Carrington (10-2, 4-0 Region 2A) swept their way to a 25-21, 25-16, 25-22 win over the previously unbeaten Firebirds on Tuesday night at the Devils Lake Sports Center.
The first set was back-and-forth early, with Devils Lake (12-1, 3-1 Region 2A) taking as much as a 7-3 lead, but with the set tied at twelve, the Cards went on a four-point run that proved to be the difference in a 25-21 first set win.
The second set saw the Firebirds take an early lead on the strength of Riley Remmick’s serve and held an 11-8 advantage before Carrington went on a 17-5 run to end the set and take a two set lead.
The third set began with Devils Lake scoring eight of the first ten points before Carrington slowly chipped away. The trailed 14-11 when Mya Neis took the service line. Eight points later, the Cards had completed a 9-0 run to put the match beyond doubt, with senior Calleigh Hewitt delivering the match-ending kill for the sweep.
Carrington have won seven region sets in a row and travel to Fessenden on Thursday to take on Harvey/Wells County with coverage on KDAK The Cardinal & YouTube beginning at around 6:45pm.
