CARMEL, Ind. — A classic film about Indiana’s signature pastime of basketball will be celebrated with a special event, the Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts said.

A 40th anniversary screening of “Hoosiers” is set for 3 p.m. Nov. 15, at the Payne & Mencias Palladium, said a news release issued Thursday. The script drew inspiration from the true story of Milan High School’s underdog win in the 1954 men’s state championship.

The Sunday event will include a live, in-person question-and-answer session with four figures from the film’s production: screenwriter Angelo Pizzo, director David Anspaugh, and actors Brad Long, who played team captain Buddy Walker, and Maris Valainis, who played Jimmy Chitwood and made the last-second winning shot.

The screening also will feature one of the film’s central props: a small, cherry-red 1939 Chevrolet school bus that transported the fictional Hickory Huskers team to games. Fans can take photos with the vehicle as it sits outside the building for the occasion.

Tickets start at $25 and are available online, at (317) 843-3800, and in person at the Payne & Mencias Palladium’s Fifth Third Bank Box Office, 1 Carter Green, Carmel. A limited number of student tickets are available for $15, and discounts will be offered for military personnel, veterans, and first responders.

The basketball drama “Hoosiers” earned two Academy Award nominations and secured a place in the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry.

The film originally opened across Indiana on Nov. 14, 1986, following its world premiere in Indianapolis on Nov. 10, 1986.
