HAVANA TIMES – I want to invite you to the solo exhibition of young artist Daniela Sauri F., which opened on Saturday, September 12.

Daniela has drawn her inspiration from everyday life—from what concerns most of us Cubans who still live on the island: food and money. Two things that become more difficult to obtain with each passing day in our country, as money loses its value and the prices of goods continue to rise.

Daniela approaches this with the natural freshness of her youth. She adds a touch of humor to each painting, reflecting that Cuban tendency to “turn everything into a joke,” as we say here. In general, we take pride in our ability to turn even the most terrible situations into comedy, as a way of coping with everyday life.

The artist uses Cuban banknotes of different denominations as the support for her paintings, choosing them very carefully. She plays with the colors, the value of the bills, and the type of painting she creates on each one.

The format is very well chosen. In each piece, she incorporates a phrase or popular street saying filled with Cuban humor, bringing a breath of fresh air into the chaos we are living through and making us smile.

This body of work formed part of the artist’s graduation thesis at the Higher Institute of Art [ISA]. She uses mixed media.
